After a twelve hour drive that was actually quite comfortable, we're in Virginia! From here we head North on Interstate 81 until we reach the Canadian border in the Thousand Islands.
It was quite warm and muggy when we left at 7:30 this morning. The car had been stuffed last night, so we had very little to do this morning. It stayed cloudy until noon and slowly got warmer 25C + by mid day. No serious traffic issues anywhere except that this route has many more trucks than the further west route that we have been using the last few years. We expected more motor-homes and trailers; it seems that the last time we went this way, the road was just packed with returning snow birds. It's possible that we're on the road a little earlier this year that in the past, and that accounts for the difference, who knows?
We 'did' 6 states today: Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South and North Carolinas, and now Virginia. We started getting into the mountains by early afternoon and probably climbed one of the longest hills, it had to be a couple or three miles. It was long enough that we passed at the very least a dozen trucks that could go no further.
The scenery just kept improving as we gained altitude; there was just enough haze in the distance to make background mountains a nice blurry, hazy, blue. By then, the traffic had thinned out a lot and the whole experience was very pleasant! Should return to this area to explore for pictures, someday...
So that's day one. Weather permitting, we should have two easy days ahead of us. Wish us luck!
