On Tuesday, we headed off to the Zoo, but there was no parking to be found anywhere so ended up at Birch Aquarium, part of the Scripps research institute.
This place is always on our to-do list and this was likely our fourth or fifth visit. As usual, we were not disappointed: there is always something new to learn.
Here's a little guy with beautiful anemones in the background.
Some tanks are completely bare like this one. It's filled with jelly fish that rise and fall with the current. They shone various coloured lights from above and I thought this green the least intrusive.
This tank is huge: the 'glass' is actually ten inch think acrylic weighting in at a cool 10 tons, and holding back 200+ tons of water. I wonder if this kid's Mother knew that.

This was quite a dark area since the Nautilus live in deep waters. This Nautilus was about 9 inches tall.
These are the black and white version of clown fish.
A few of my favourites: the Seahorse. Many types are being bred here at the institute.

And finally, a few pipe fish, close relatives of the Seahorse.
All the tanks were clean, all the sea life healthy. What a great way to spend a few hours.
