Road to Deerfield Florida

Back on the road again, this time from the reservation to Deerfield Fl.  After another crack of dawn departure [near ten...] we drove North towards Lake Okeechobee.  This lake is kind of hard to see because it's man-made and surrounded  by a huge earth dam.  The lake has to be more than 30 miles long and is surrounded by fairly poor villages.  The main crop nearby is sugar cane and we saw large fields being set on fire, part of how they manage the crop.  We saw thousands of acres of the stuff!

We also drove by acres of shrimp farms, and here I thought that shrimps came from the sea...  Eventually, we drove to the sea coast and headed back south to Deerfield where my Brother Ron and Helene have rented a flat for the month.  We drove on the Dixie highway along the shore for most of the way, a very slow but pretty drive through very rich areas.  We found a motel nearby and will stay here two nights.  After a great beach-side supper, we had a fairly long walk along the Deerfield boardwalk [actually interlocking stones] that goes along the beach for miles.  What fun!

In answer to the baby ostrich question, I think there are nine whole babies, one more if you're counting feet, about six more if you include the ones outside the picture area...  Good job Jacob!  Very close Eric!
