Today we went to the wonderful San Diego Zoo with Tom and Gloria who had business in California, and came for a visit for the weekend. Of course any zoo visit should start with the arctic area right?
I couldn't resist this juxtaposition of a Heron and a Polar Bear: strange bed fellows.
Of course, Polar bears like carrots and need treats like Sweet potatoes...
These next two are Spectacled Eider ducks, having their afternoon nap. Note the female's bright blue beak. They live in Northern Siberia and Alaska, and seem quite content in California.
Next is a Harpy Eagle: they live in Southern Mexico through to Argentina. This guy is looking over the constant crowds walking by, as his mate is sitting on a large, messy nest nearby. The eaglets will be returned to nature if the hatch is successful.
This is the best I could do with a snow leopard; he was amongst the trees snacking.
Of course this zoo is famous for its Panda bears: here's the Mom of a half dozen that have been returned to China for reestablishment in the wild. Pandas were never the exiting ones to watch, and this one is no exception. Maybe they get active when the people leave?
This is an African Olive Pidgeon: not the prettiest bird in the zoo, but a steady poser...

These guys are Blue Crowned Hanging Parrots from Borneo and Sumatra. Their green colour was wildly florescent!
Our stay in San Diego has just begun; you can bet we'll be returning to the zoo often. ...to be continued.
