A trip to Sanibel and the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge should be a requirement for everyone on Wednesday mornings.
Today had more than little fog in the morning, and this is the view from the bridge to Sanibel.
Once on the island, and into the Ding Darling Refuge, this Reddish Egret greeted us: it was going to be a good birding day!
The 'special du jour' was this Belted Kingfisher, unfortunately very far away: this is the clearest shot I could make, and it really doesn't show the exceptional colour this particular bird had.
This next shot is not clear, sharp, or anything like that: it is a picture of this Kingfisher flying away.
An action shot or what?
The next shot is a Roseate Spoonbill, one of the more dramatic large long legged waterbirds.
Preening is such fun. Next is a more standard pose.
These white pelicans are much larger than the usual brown pelicans. I guess preening was the order of the day.
I watched an Osprey taking a bath in the water. Here he is flying of to do his nesting duties.
A good telescope is the only way to spot birds. This is Phyllis adjusting the very powerful telescope on a Bald Eagle, about two miles away! Phyllis is the one who spotted the Belted Kingfisher, unfortunately, it was too far away for me to make decent pictures, so what you see above is not all that great...
Of course, when big birds land, it can be a big production. This large White Ibis is using a little body English to help him steer in for a landing.
Putting on the brakes as the toes almost touch down.
And splash down! Yet another safe landing amongst friends.
