King Tides at La Jolla Cove

Yesterday's sunshine was unexpected, we were supposed to have four days of storms.  Well, the storm for day three arrived today.  Very wild winds, heavy rain, and grey stormy skies, as expected.

Joan and I drove to La Jolla to see the waves 'up close and personal'. The rain was pelting down with a vengeance but a few photos were made.

These next two pictures are a record of one wave showing its progress over the cliffs. This clift is about 10 metres high or so: you can see the gull in the foreground as a reference for scale. [click to see larger]

Here's another area where you can see successive waves breaking, the mark of a pretty serious storm.

And finally, another wave burying the rock that held the sea lions a few days ago.

The driving was relatively slow and tense: many areas had standing water whose splash would eliminate any forward view, no matter how fast your wipers were working. We had no problems getting home, but two hours later, Phillip could not negotiate an underpass that was OK for us, since the road had been closed due to the flooded underpass.  We've seen this in the past, and we're likely to see more since Saturday and Sunday are likely to be the same or worse.

One has to remember that January is San Diego's rainy season; it's just that the last few years were nearly bone dry.

This too will pass...
