San Diego, California, yea!

This morning was the second morning that was not below freezing, and today was the first day that we didn't see snow: things are definitely looking up! ... and about time too!

We started on Interstate 10 and later Interstate 8, the most direct route to San Diego. Six or so hours later we arrived at Phillip and Kathleen's a little earlier than planned so we did the car-wash thing. Then we did the latte and polar mocha coffee thing and all was well with the world. We had our coffees outside, in the warm sun, looking at our clean car; what more could life offer? Kathleen and Phillip, that's what! but I digress.

The interstate is definitely the fastest way to travel and this time there were few interruptions and less construction, so we made excellent time. Along the way there are mountains to cross, leaving sea level [about 100 miles from the sea, I might add] up to 4000 feet, back down to 2000 feet then back up to 4000 feet before settling down to a gradual fall to near sea level which is San Diego. The hills are so steep that they have to provide water for radiators every 1/4 mile of so. We didn't see too many vehicles broken down, but did see a few on the side of the road with hoods up.

Along the way we stopped at this God forsaken place in the middle of nowhere [where we had stopped last year] and made these two pictures. The first is of a viewing tower that wanted $3 @ to see over the fence. I found a low spot on the fence and made the second picture [for free...].

The clouds were kind of neat and unusual and if you look at the detail in the photograph, you might see the ribbons of road that we drove on to get here. You do have to look at an enlarged view, [double click on picture] but if you look carefully, you can see ribbons of highway snaking around the mountains.

We were warmly received by Phillip and Kathleen and after the car was unloaded, we exchanged Christmas gifts and toasted the New Year. After a glass of wine and some cheese, we walked to a closed restaurant then another that wanted our custom. We had a very good meal then walked home where it was time to move furniture so we would be comfortable for the next month.

We may take a day or two to settle in, but later I'll try to update with pictures of the Zoo and other interesting places we will be seeing.
